In the afternoons after school, I was blessed enough to fish for redfish with my brothers in our fourteen foot panga. Being 14 years old, we learned a lot. We also lost a bunch of tackle— especially popping corks. This turned out to become a slight problem, because when our dad would go fishing the next weekend he wouldn’t have any popping corks left. Sorry Dad!
One day while fishing our favorite redfish cove, a light bulb went off when Lyons Jr. lost a cork and said “I wish I could make these things, then we’d never run out!” When we got back home, we pitched the idea to our parents and they were unbelievably supportive, like they always are. From there we started testing different materials and prototypes, looking for the best materials possible to suit our needs. Finally, we created the Fairhope Rattle that is constructed of thick stainless steel wire, tie-dye beads, a 3/8 oz egg weight, and a high visibility cork.
In 2017, our dream became a reality when we sold our first Fairhope Rattle. Since that summer, it has been all hands on deck to hand-craft, package, market, and distribute our corks. None of this could have been accomplished without the relentless support from our parents. Most of our days and evenings are shared laughing around the production station in our home, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.
